fasting animals

This project features bold illustrations exploring fasting in the animal kingdom. Humans from different cultures and belief systems across the world have been fasting for centuries, but we aren’t the only ones. In the animal kingdom, fasting plays an important role in regulating  aspects of reproduction, development, hibernation, estivation, and migration. Some animals fast for days or months for a variety of different reasons.

The featured animals are depicted in a bold, blocky style inspired by Square Kufic calligraphy traditionally found in Islamic regions, notably in architecture. The playful graphics tug at our innate child-like curiosity, allowing us to find joy in learning while nurturing a deeper connection with nature.

The bright blocky creatures recall childhood building blocks and spur a desire for learning and a deep commune with nature.
